If there’s one thing I love about Florida, it’s the array of beautiful parks and trails that we have. Any day you can just go outside and follow the sidewalk to a pretty place, either secluded or busy! Today we took a bike ride through Punta Gorda’s Gilchrist Park, which is situated right next to the beautiful Peace River. It’s great bike riding in Florida!
We started out journey near the newly renovated playground and then got the bike ready. Once the helmet was on, my daughter and I followed the sidewalk, dodging lizards scattering across, until we came to the pier. Once we arrived at the pier, we noticed several people standing there and staring at the water, some with cameras in their hands. I asked, “What do you see?” and, of course, they replied “dolphins!”.
We did, indeed, see a dolphin today, much to my six year old daughter’s delight. I wasn’t able to catch a picture of it, because those dolphins are so quick, but it was definitely a sight to see! Then we returned onto the path, we went past the gazebo, and then checked out the back side of the hotel. There were palm trees all around, and a variety of Florida birds flying around us.
Continuing down the pathway, we came upon the Ponce de Leon fountain that is located inside the park. My daughter splashed around a bit and smelled the flowers that bloom near the fountain. That park certainly is a sight to see!
We followed the path around the side until we came across the old pier, which had been destroyed by a previous hurricane years ago. Birds, including pelicans, perched on top of the old wood planks in the harbor, looking downwards for their dinner. We got some good pictures in this area, and then continued forward, towards the hotel pool, and then past Hurricane Charley’s Bar & Grill.
I told my daughter that we had probably gone far enough – that we should head back. She insisted on going just a bit farther, so we continued down that Harborwalk sidewalk, observing a fisherman fishing off the bridge. Eventually we were both worn out and returned back where we started.
Any day we head outside in Florida is a good day! Anywhere you go in Florida you’ll find birds flying, fish swimming, and an assortment of wildlife. Bike riding in Florida is so fun! Who knows what our next adventure will bring!?
